Documentary Review: Alone in a Haunted House (2004)

About the Documentary:
This spine-chilling and deeply thought-provoking documentary follows the exploits of paranormal investigator Joshua P. Warren, who, in an attempt to prove or disprove once and for all the existence of apparitions and spirits, spends a night in a home known to be haunted. What transpires is positively spooky as Warren (who wrote How to Hunt Ghosts) uses tools such as infrared scanners and electrostatic generators to arrive at the truth.

My Thoughts:

I often watch documentaries, especially relating to the paranormal. As a researcher, it is good to know what is out there, and what has been done in terms of research. I stumbled onto this one on Netflix. Netflix recommended this to me at only 1 star, so I wasn't expecting anything spectacular. After watching, I couldn't understand why it was even rated. It was 25 minutes of nothing but Joshua P. Warren talking and making over exaggerated expressions to try and portray emotion, which was failing miserably. It was funny at first, but then you realized, he was trying to be serious.

The documentary was neither spine chilling nor thought provoking.  Mr. Warren must of written that himself, for it was not even close. The addition of sound effects, including a deep scary-like voice, were the only real interesting aspects of the entire documentary, and they came off as completely pathetic and try hard. Browsing through some of the feedback (all of which were 1 stars), I found them to actually be far more entertaining than the actual documentary itself. Here are their responses to the documentary.

"This should be under mockumentaries instead of documentaries. I want to know where it was pine-chilling and deeply thought-provoking. More like lame. Warren is annoying and extremely melodramatic. The scary monster voice was so pathetic I laughed. Im really glad I saw it through the instant play because I would have been upset about wasting my movie rental on this one."

"I hate you Joshua Warren.. The only spine chilling thing about your documentary was that it was even released and the only thing that scared me was the possibility that you would do another one. You should have been locked in that haunted house."

"OK. Probably not the best out there. BUT, after having done some work in this field for a few years myself, I can say that the video quality is due to the equipment he used. Thats just the type of quality you get with nightvision shots and home video. The production was pretty good. Warren came across as pretty staged at times. I think this was meant to be serious. BUT, again, he had to make due with what footage he could get. If he only had access to the site for that one night, he had to use THAT footage. There are no guarantees that youll get anything usefull/interesting. What he did get was pretty typical and unimpressive. Weve had the same outcome on many a night. A for effort though."

"Stupid. Hated it. A whopping 26 minutes of bugs and house settling. Never have rated a movie before, but felt the strong need to warn people."

"Imagine Alton Brown (from the Food Network) yapping for 20 minutes about flying dust and ghost gadgets. Boring and bad. "

"By far the worst attempt at a paranormal "investigation" I have ever watched. This movie had the quality of a poorly done local news broadcats at Halloween but far cheesier. Don't waste your time. Watch the history channel or sci-fi network instead. I fast forwarded through about 20 minutes of it and still feel dumber from being exposed to it."

Overall it was at least good for a laugh, but in a pathetic "I can't believe that this was meant to be taken seriously" kind of humor. If there was an option to rate at no stars, it would probably be rated a 0, but alas, Netflix gives them the benefit of the doubt and at least gives them a star. Kudos to your star. You earned it.
